Creating a Short-term English Language Workshop for University Students
◆研究概要
There are two fundamental learning styles when studying a foreign language: an analytical approach and a global approach. Japanese students often exhibit tendencies related to an analytical approach, such as being more reflective than impulsive, detailed and precision oriented, a preference for a formal classroom, frustration with ambiguity and being comfortable with rote memorization. The overall focus is on accuracy rather than fluency. In contrary to this, the principles of communicative language teaching (CLT) strongly encourage learners to adapt characteristics associated with a global learning approach. These include, impulsiveness, focus on meaning rather than accuracy and tolerance to ambiguity. Both learning styles are highly effective and learners should be encouraged to use strategies associated to both approaches.
Hence, my research plan is to create a workshop and short-term intensive language course which encourages learners to experiment with various learning strategies to help improve their overall language learning ability. The workshop can be one or two days, while the short-term course is no longer than five days. I would like to experiment using this at various other universities throughout Japan to get a better understanding of the learning tendencies of students around the country. As for Kyoto Sangyo University, I think a workshop which teaches our students how to learn more effectively could help improve our current language program and would be a great selling point when encouraging future students to enroll in our program. To achieve this goal, I would like to use the above research allowance for travel to various academic meetings and to visit other universities to promote our university. |
