◆研究概要
I will continue to focus on researching and experimenting with learning activities based on music, song lyrics, and musical performances. I will also continue to look at the role of understanding and familiarity with English-language plot structure when English learners read fiction and non-fiction Extensive Reading texts. I will research the latest findings in cognitive science about how the human brain understands, analyzes, learns, and enables us to teach others through stories.
My research project for 2024 is to focus on the use of profanity in English. Profane language and gestures have existed as part of human communication since the dawn of civilization in most languages of the world. However, there is very little academic research on this topic and no mention of it in language teaching textbooks. Students usually first encounter it directly when they travel overseas, and increasingly these days, when they interact with native speakers online. They are also exposed to it in pop culture, especially through song lyrics. They need to be prepared for such encounters, to know the connotative meanings of the expressions they will hear, and to know where and when it is best not to mimic their foreign peers. I have started to research the history of profanity and how it is processed in the brain. Profane language is stored and processed in two different systems in the brain: the automatic speech system, which is located in the basal ganglia and emotion system circuitry, and the intentional speech system, based in Wernicke's and Broca's areas. Use of profanity is closely tied to intense emotions and profane words are uttered in a wide range of situations: to express anger, fear, surprise, happiness, to increase tolerance to physical and emotional pain, to shock, to amuse, to insult, etc. I have been using pop music and films to teach about English-speaking cultures. I realize that I need to include the uses of profanity in my courses and will create new teaching materials that explain and advise students on this topic. I have already given one workshop (February 2, 2024) on this topic and will be giving a talk on March 28, 2024, and at the JALT Pan SIG conference in Fukui in May. I have submitted a paper on profanity and emotion for publication on April 1, 2024, and a proposal for a workshop at the International JALT 2024 conference in November in Shizuoka. I plan to write up this workshop presentation for the conference proceedings. |
