概要 | Among Japan’s aging population are many non-Japanese residents who do not plan to return to their birth country. People from many professions have come to Japan with various cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Most of these long-term residents speak some Japanese (from basic to near native fluency levels). Many speak English as a first or additional language, but the first language of many others is neither English nor Japanese and these people must not be overlooked. Multilingual people lose their additional language(s) facility with age. They need effective emotional support from people who share their own cultural and linguistic background. We created a nationwide network called Counterpoint in 2022 and are building our membership with monthly online and face-to face meetings and social activities. Our goal is to become an NPO and provide space and care services for elderly residents from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. |
