概要 | "Fast thinking" refers to intuitive thought and the automatic mental activities of perception and memory. For example, the operations that enable you to know there is a pen on your desk or to retrieve the name of the capital of Japan. It operates quickly and automatically, with little or no effort and no sense of voluntary control. In contrast, "slow thinking" is the subjective experience of agency, choice, and concentration. It is deliberate and effortful thinking which drains our mental and physical energy resources. Fast thinking is essential for survival, and is generally reliable. However, it can be unreliable at times. One example that teachers need to be aware of is the halo effect, which can lead teachers into making biased evaluations of students’ work. Fast thinking can also lead students to make elementary mistakes on exam papers. Strategies for encouraging students to think slowly when required were discussed. |
