概要 | The speaker explained the role of the phonological loop (our “inner ear” and our “inner voice”) when we process information in our working memory and discussed the importance of the phonological loop in language learning, and especially in learning to read. The first stage of reading involves developing phonological awareness of the spoken language, then recognizing the correspondence between the sounds of the language and the visual shapes that represent them. This requires reorganization within our brain as we learn to connect a sound to a visual representation. At the beginning stage, we use the sounds of the letters of an alphabetic language like English (using our “inner ear”) to decipher the meaning of a word. With practice, we can start to make a direct connection between the visual symbols and their meaning without relying on the auditory circuit (our “inner ear”.) Materials and methods helpful in building learners’ reading skills were shared. |
