概要 Graded reading material has been simplified to match the lexical and syntactic knowledge of learners at different stages of proficiency in their target language (TL). The aim of such simplified reading material is to increase the automatic processing of the TL to enhance reading comprehension, fluency, and speed. This paper reports the extent to which Japanese university students enrolled in a required English extensive reading program used their first language (L1) when reading in English and the reasons why they do this. A survey of university students (N=2,464) was undertaken in 2012 and followed up with in-depth interviews with students (N=30)from the same cohort. The surprising frequency of the use of the L1 and the variety of reasons why it is used are discussed. It is not simply because they have been taught to translate by is related to working memory load, fluency levels, and reading strategies as well as the style and contents of the graded reading materials.
