概要 It is challenging to help students understand what the cities and natural spaces look like in another country, and its people's behavior, values, and preoccupations. Films can approximate the experience of being in another country and tell stories powerfully and evoke deep emotional responses. When students share the emotions of a film's characters, they can appreciate a foreign culture at a deeper level. This paper discusses using British films focusing on Neil Jordan's "The Crying Game" (1992). The story, set in Northern Ireland and London, deals with themes such as IRA terrorism, racial prejudice, friendship, loyalty, and homosexuality. The class contents and methodology are explained and the written responses of 102 students to this film and the characters are analyzed. A large number showed a remarkable awareness and acceptance of the common humanity they share with the film's characters.
