概要 Sound perception is a crucial factor in constructing the meaning of written languages and the phonological loop is our "inner ear" and our "inner voice" which play an important role in learning to read and when reading texts that demand very close attention. This article explains how this vital part of our working memory system was first recognized by cognitive scientists in the 1960s and 1970s and how they demonstrated its role in learning vocabulary as well as how to read. Implications of these findings for foreign language teachers are discussed.
