| 概要 | This paper looks first at the ways in which not only English, but other languages (Czech, Portuguese, Finnish, Chinese, and Japanese) are biased in favor of the male in order to emphasize that gender bias is not merely a linguistic phenomenon, but a social and political one. Next, ways in which English-speaking women and men use the language are examined in order to discuss whether this too is to the advantage of the male. Suggestions are made on how to eliminate gender bias in one7s own use of English and in the teaching of English. The conclusion reached is that sex differences in speech are not in fact related to gender but to power structures and that the elimination of gender bias will only be achieved if male and female roles are redefined and power rebalanced. |
